  • Viennese coffee culture is really nothing new for seasoned Viennese and you would be surprised how often “Genuine Viennese coffee house” is advertised in Czech or Polish cities.

One particular speciality that can be enjoyed in many Viennese coffee houses is mokka. Also known as mokka, cafe mocha or mochaccino, it is a popular coffee variation consisting of espresso, hot milk, chocolate syrup and liquid chocolate. Due to the high proportion of chocolate, the mokka has a strong milky and sweet flavour, which makes it the perfect drink for a break in the coffee house.

The name “mokka” originally comes from the Yemeni city of “Al Mukah”, which used to be an important port for loading coffee. The beans for mokka are roasted more vigorously than for espresso and ground very finely to achieve a dust-fine texture.

Traditionally, Viennese mocha is brewed as an espresso and then infused with cocoa, sugar and hot milk. It is served in a characteristic large glass, but there are also modern versions that are more reminiscent of the American mochaccino.

We also have a wide selection of high-quality mokka beans in stock, perfectly roasted for the traditional preparation of mokka.
